Mum once told us

When I die, I want to be scattered in the Rangitātā

where the current is strong

There, she can sprint amongst the rapids

and rest in the pools and eddies

with the stones beneath her feet

and the sunshine on her face,

as they carry the leaves towards the sea

When I die, please sprinkle me in the Waitematā

or where the Waiwera meets the ocean

so Dad and I can watch the boats

And I will live,

mulling about the shore

settling in the rockpools and in the soft places

where the leaves collect

where the earth is cool and silty

and I will drift beneath the current

to meet my mother in the ocean

with the sunshine on our face
