Not a huge amount has been happening these past two weeks as I'm just focusing on rounding things off for EOY, but here is a brief summary :)
Practice happenings:
This past week I've been focusing on the Research Summary and some external obligations (my sister is getting married in just under 3 weeks time, so everything is busy on all fronts!). I'm still finding it hard to write, but have 99% of it finished; just have some final editing to do, then I'll move on to focusing on the Portfolio and EOY video work.
For EOY installation, I've settled for now on making use of the mylar/transparency film I have on hand and making a screen to project onto (840 x 1490 cm approx. would match the projector's 16:9 ratio and paper size). For now, I'm focusing on constructing something similar to that used in Sarah Davis' exhibition at DEMO last week, with a bit more structural support. This may not be the final set up used, but I just want to get something started so I can get a better feel for how things will look and make plans accordingly. I picked up some wood for this yesterday, along with some small mirrors last week in case I need to try to make the mirror rig set up. My aim is to assemble this over the weekend/early next week, then de-assemble so I can move out of the studio before the Yr 3s set up their work... As a backup, I have also found some fabric I can use for either front or back projection (at a relatively low cost thankfully) if I decide to go with a different approach, and still intend on sourcing some fabric from Geoff's Emporium - either white blackout fabric to stretch on a structure around the projector to contain light pollution from it, or black fabric to hang on the walls of the projection room to reduce light bounce. (Sketch of a potential mirror rig set up below etc., please ignore Yr 3 paraphernalia)
For studio work, I've been working on scripts to go along with the video works, adapted from the writing done during my stay on Rangitoto. My sister will be helping record one this weekend (she has worked as a voice actor and audiobook reader before, so I trust her to do a better job of it than me! I also asked a friend who is a singer and whose voice I think is lovely, but she is too busy to be able to help). I am undecided if I will include it as an element to the work but will know once I have things together. I did try out some on-screen text narration/overlay, but I found it competed with the point clouds too much and made the visual impact too busy; felt too much like subtitles, and detracted from the focus of things. I've also continued working away at the point cloud video files - unfortunately I had to restart a couple of them as the files were corrupted (not too much work to do, but a pain nonetheless!). For the photoprints, I will be contacting Yoon next week re. printing - the ones I have from the group exhibition should be ok, but one has minor damage and should probably be redone...
Masters thoughts
I'm still on the fence about study next year, but aim to apply just in case and make a final decision on it over the Summer break period. As much as I love the idea of continuing on with the Master's program next year, I also feel like I should probably take some time out in the 'real world' for a little bit to work on sustaining my practice outside of study and to put some energy into other areas of life that I've been neglecting this year. I do want to continue my studies in future; if not studying next year my intention is to do so in 2024 and to make use of next year look into residencies, collaborations, and other opportunities (like the Uxbridge Arts Competition for example, with the relevant focus on ecology), and to keep up with exhibition openings as much as I can.
