EOY Draft - Version 1
Technical info:
video is 6:20 long and 1920 x 1080 (this matches the projector specs)
For the video component, I decided to omit some of the point cloud files I made (for example the yellow lichen) as they didn't fit well into the flow or narrative and I didn't feel the need to use all of them. I haven't reused point cloud files, but there are some views that are quite similar to each other - am slightly worried that things might feel a little too samey in some parts, though I might just be overthinking things~
I have a suspicion I might need to adjust the speed and pacing of the clips and sequence once I see what it's like on a projected screen. I've found that the point clouds feel faster and a little overwhelming on a larger scale if displayed at the same speed they would be on a digital screen
For the audio, have added some light ambient background sound (free-to-use) into the mix to help tie things together. It's not 100% necessary, but does seem to work better than just the narration alone when combined with the video; as mentioned in my previous posts on audio, I feel the narration by itself suits a more static image, but with the moving point clouds I feel I can afford to be a little more expansive with things, for want of a better word
I feel there could be a little more spacing between the narrative "chapters" in some places; as with the video, I may adjust this once I see what this feels like in an exhibition setting. I feel each clip should have room to breath with the background audio included (gaps feel more out of place without it/using only the narration), and I suspect it is necessary for them to have space as without it the video feels too much like a show real of point cloud files...
Currently, the only major adjustments I feel I would make to this version are potentially around the soundtracks used (audio mixing is completely unfamiliar to me!). I've also made a second version (same video sequence; below) - the background ambient sound is lower, which allows the narration to stand out more.
Why this ambient audio? - I wanted something "neutral", ambient but not in a way that directs perception too much; I tried to position the audio in ways that matched some of the pauses in the video as I found when watching it there were certain points where I'd instinctively stop and take a breath; I tried to allow the natural swells in sound to mirror this bodily relationship/the breath... I don't know if anyone else experiences this, but I'd be curious to see if so
I do have some other writing (not mine, would need to check permissions) that I could record and use, but now everything is coming together I'm feeling a lot better about what I currently have. I don't want to make things more complicated if I can avoid it (for myself or my sister!) so for now the plan is to use the original recording based off the script I wrote on Rangitoto.
Installation planning
Projection room - if I am to line the walls with fabric to reduce light bounce, I will need 14.9m of 280cm wide fabric (this would cover the floating projection screen wall instead of going under it). I can either buy fabric of this dimension at Spotlight (cheapest place I've found so far) or by repurposing super-king bed sheets. Both work out at about the same price
Screen - after measuring, I've calculated that for a 16:9 ratio screen with a maximum height of 841mm (dimension of the paper screen), I'll need to create something with external dimensions of 841 x 1495 mm. Taking into account the thickness of the wood I bought, I'll need to cut two ~841mm and two ~1435mm pieces... (I'm not the best at maths though, so will double check with Oleg!)
Another possibility - no screen at all? Using grommets, wire and small weights to suspend the screen from the roof (could be a nice material/spatial link to the Hauraki Gulf if using fishing weights...)
To install the screen, Noel suggested the option of adjustable ceiling wires. I think the ephemeral nature of the video doesn't sit as well with the plywood support concept that I drew up earlier, so this could be a good option. Though again, will see how everything feels once I'm set up in the space; not sure yet if it will need something to 'ground' itself or not...
I'm still trying to figure out where to place the projector, but again, will depend where the screen sits in the space!
