S2 Wk16 - EOY installation plans and finalisations

What I've been up to this week:

  • Frame making - Oleg is currently assembling the frame; once it's made I will secure the paper to it with his help. He has confirmed there is 1mm and 2mm wire and crimps available for me to use to suspend it, as well as some eyelet screws if the turnbuckles are too chunky for it (though have picked up a couple just in case)

  • Projection testing - since the projection room is full of BFA junk (have emailed Christina about this), I've been testing the projection at home. I've figured out the projector will need to be 1.8 - 2m from the screen to achieve the dimensions I need. Below are images of paper mock-ups to scale of the space. I'm leaning towards the lower two options,

  • After speaking with Oleg, it sounds like rear projection is going to be the most effective method of displaying things, as I expected. Initially I considered resolving this with the mirror rig set up (lower right image above), however I don't feel I have time or energy to try to fiddle with this last minute - figuring out how to hide everything is going to be an issue, and if I can simply mount the projector on the ceiling instead I will still be able to achieve a good effect I think.

  • Finishing my portfolio - I've completed 99% of this; all that is needed are images of my final projection work (which I'll try to get done in Form Gallery this week) and possibly a copy of my statement (unsure if needed in it). I've contacted a couple of printing companies and will be visiting them on Wednesday afternoon to discuss paper and binding options.

  • Kaikomako print plans - I'll hopefully be collecting them from Yoon over the next couple of days; my plan is to install them on Friday if whoever has work there currently is quick to deinstall; if not, I'll get in first thing next Monday morning. Currently working on spacing plan for installation.

  • Aside from all this, have made a master document containing all the tools and supplies I'll need for installation next week. As I won't be able to work over the weekend, I want to make this as streamlined as humanly possible!

Issues/Tasks to resolve:

  • Flickering in video - the last segment in my EOY video has a weird flickering effect around the edges of the point cloud when projected; is likely due to the angle I recorded it in in Blender. This feels quite distracting so I may have to remake this section to resolve it...

  • Printing of portfolio - visiting Centurion this Wednesday for a quote and planning

  • SPEAKERS! - I dropped the ball and forgot that I may need to organise some speakers to plug into my projector for the audiovisual install... have emailed Yoon asking if he has any available at the last minute (though I'm past the AV request date); if not I will probably use some I have at my home. The projector has a speaker on it, but it gets drowned out a little by its fan...

  • Final projector placement - will need to talk this through with Oleg; the plan is to jump into the projection room space as early as possible on Monday morning and start putting things together

  • Projection room - currently a storage space, and has a broken light hanging from the ceiling... have emailed Christina and Oleg re. this - Oleg will be contacting the property manager to repair it before the deadline.

  • Statement - need to write this. I'll be using the conclusion from my Research Summary as a base for it, but will need to figure out what else to write about...

Random aside - astronomical contexts

While it has not been my intention to mimic images taken from space probes and satellites in my studio work, I have been keeping up with imaging coming out of several on exploration missions for various reasons, as covered elsewhere in this blog. One of the YouTube channels I follow around space exploration posted this video this week - it features the last images captured by the Rosetta-Philae a few years ago before it crashed into the surface of the comet it was observing. While not intentional, I do like some of the similarities between them and the "Martian" sections of my EOY video... and also it's just a fascinating project to read up on!
