Presented three works - the printed kaikōmako series, moving image of orchid scan, and the lichen point cloud work
Kaikōmako (printed images, satin paper, A1 size)
test out metallic photo paper for printing; ask Yoon about test prints, may be a good option for the works
feeling resolved; more effective printed than on screen (always going to be issues with screen resolutions, colour balance, etc. Printing gets around these issues and allows much more of the detail to come through
masking tape and double sided tape good for install., but may be troublesome in humid spaces (something to be mindful of for future installations)
could even be slightly bigger, command and take ownership of a bit more space
Pointcloud system of lichen and scoria (projected and on screen)
working well! may be better on screen as a lot of the detail is lost in the projection
could be lifted with the inclusion of narration or audio of some kind - would be good for contextualising the connections at play (between Rangitoto, Mars, these visible yet distant places and landscapes, etc.)
with the ability to move the camera through the work, consider how and why, and what the effect of doing so it (not saying this isn't working in this work currently, but always something to be mindful of)
visual ambiguity feels good; relevant to site and specific studio focus but also open ended, room for though and imagination (camera looking onto, through, below, etc.; panning view simple but effective enough); connection to landscape, specificity, particles/atoms/stars/etc.
Orchids (projected)
more stylised, not necessarily a bad thing; more obvious manipulation of camera view, etc., just something to be mindful of as always
the fact that is a moving image seems to work well, as does the larger scale; camera may be too active through the object though, a little over done?
like the pointcloud, narration or audio would help contextualise what the viewer is looking at
Moving forward
All the pieces are there, just need to make and trust the process; don't get bogged own in critical research at this point, already have enough
play, explore; keep refining and testing things out
consider narrative - how to tie the different elements together (Mars, Rangitoto, etc.; what's the core connection and how can that be visualised/centred/resolved/etc.); brainstorm and refine for clarity
sound recording - ambient sound, birdsong, etc. good, but also consider voice over; if so, of what? could be very scientific/analytical (i.e. reading from a study that relates to the film content) or more imaginative (creative writing, etc.); do some writing; if voiceover, who would be a good fit?
for presentation/install - print, screen and projector are valid options, but also starting points; other possibilities out there (stretched canvas for projection ground, boxes and alternative installation for TV screens, etc.); test things out
follow up on links from Yolunda and Noel re. artists, exhibition, literature, etc.
DEMO available for experimentation, just have to ask :)
